Revolutionary Visions: Women in the Hudson Highlands during the American Revolution
Join us at the Putnam History Museum for the opening of Revolutionary Visions, an exhibition that explores the roles of women in the Hudson Highlands during the American Revolution. This exhibition is made possible with support from the Putnam Arts Council and in collaboration with the Southeast Museum.
Revolutionary Visions brings together art and history, featuring historical works in dialogue with new creations by commissioned local artists, including Renée Kilbride Edelman, Michael Keropian, Robyn Oakes, Cassandra Saulter, and Lisa Weinblatt. Together, the works explore the lives of women from various social classes, races, and allegiances during the American Revolutionary War, encouraging our collective reflection on the diverse roles women played during this transformative period in American history.

Southeast Museum has partnered with the Brewster Public Library to facilitate monthly History Exchange and History Book Club meetings. History Exchange has been extremely popular, attracting such local history experts such as Vincent D’Aquino, author of two books on Sybil Ludington, Alicia Briley, director of the Carmel Historical Society, Fleur Fairman, researcher of the Stone Chambers of Putnam County, Alexandra Johnson, niece of Brewster Standard Editor Marjorie Addis, Jack Duncan, Brewster military expert, and Jennifer Cassidy, Putnam County Historian, who will present at November’s meeting.
In collaboration with The Brewster Chamber of Commerce and the Putnam Historian’s office, the museum will be premiering its exhibit on The History of Business in Brewster on September 21, 2024. Debbie Oswald has been having the time of her life interviewing lifetime Brewster residents who’ve helped to recreate Main Street of the past with their memories of businesses such as Oxman’s, Hope’s Drug Store, Norm’s, The Whistle Stop, and the Cameo Theater.
These interviews have been recorded as the launch for a Brewster Oral History Project in collaboration with the Brewster Library. Please contact us with your Brewster business memories and any memorabilia you would be willing to share for this exciting exhibit.
The South Museum looks forward to its second annual collaboration with our downstairs neighbors, The Southeast Coalition, in presenting “A Festival of Trees” which invites community organizations to sponsor and decorate holiday trees in the upstairs theater space. Last year’s festive event hosted families with such holiday treats as hot chocolate with Santa, tree ornament craft making, and a caroling procession down Main Street to the tree lighting across the street from the railroad depot.
